Banaric

Most vegan leather is plastic. Polyurethane or PVC bonded to a fabric backing, which means it sheds microplastics, does not biodegrade, and is arguably worse for the environment than the animal leather it replaces. Banaric is a different starting point: a material developed by Recore, a Thane-based biomaterials company founded in 2022, made from fibre extracted from banana pseudostems, the agricultural waste left after a harvest that would otherwise be discarded.

The material is 48% banana fibre combined with plant cellulose and a bio-based PU binder. Worth being straight about what that means: Banaric is plant-based but not fully biodegradable. The binder is there for durability and real-world performance. What it does avoid is virgin plastic as a base material. Recore claims up to 80% lower carbon footprint compared to conventional synthetic leather. The bags and wallets are 100% vegan and cruelty-free.
